Project FührMINT on success factors for women in academic STEM fields

Within the FührMINT Project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 01.10.2016 - 30.09.2019, we investigated success factors for women in academic STEM fields. We conducted multiple experiments, field studies, and interview studies to analyze how universities can attract, select, and promote female talents with high potential for academic leadership positions. The project aimed to uncover how requirements differ across career stages, how gender steretoypes and differences influence recruitment and career advancement to leadership positions, and which leadership styles are most effective for male vs. female academic leaders. Based on our findings, we developed guidelines and interventions to professionalize recruitment and career development processes in academic STEM fields, including the development of a leadership training for scientists and a gender-sensitivity training for decision makers in organizations.

Project FührMINT ll on gender-specific differences in the perception and evaluation of destructive leadership in academia

In January 2020, we started our follow-up project FührMINT ll on gender-specific differences in the perception and evaluation of destructive leadership in academia – once again with a special focus on the male-dominated STEM disciplines. The project FührMINT ll is also funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), ending in March 2021. Within this project, we aim to determine the prevalence of perceived destructive leadership of male and female professors in STEM disciplines in Germany, and investigate gender differences and the role of gender stereotypes in the perception and evaluation of destructive leader behavior. We will conduct field studies as well as an experiment to investigate our research questions and will again have a focus on developing guidelines and interventions to work against gender biases and facilitate constructive leadership in academia.

Please note: This website's content as well as developed guidelines and interventions are mostly in German.
